Inspector Morse and

The Old Bookbinders Ale House

The Bookbinders made it's TV debut in the first televised episode of Inspector Morse - The Dead of Jericho, in 1987. Called the Devils Printer in Colin Dexter's novel, the pub appeared as itself in the TV episode.

Located opposite 'Canal Reach' (actually called Combe Road) where two of the characters met their early demise, Morse and Lewis head into the pub to discuss the case further. To those of you that know the Bookbinders you will realise at this point that the internal scenes were not shot in the pub but in a rather blander bar.

These 'behind the scenes' photos were taken by (and reproduced with the kind permission of) Ted Harris, one of our regulars who lives on Combe Road and was lucky enough to meet the stars and enjoy a drink and a chat with John Thaw in the Bookbinders.
